How Tile Quantity Is Calculated
The calculator divides your total surface area by the area of a single tile to get the base count, then adds your wastage percentage on top. Wastage matters here more than in most trades — edge cuts, corners, and the occasional breakage during handling all eat into a delivery.
Formula Used
Area (m²) = Length × Width
Tile Area = Tile Length × Tile Width
Tiles = (Area ÷ Tile Area) × (1 + Wastage %)
Frequently Asked Questions
How much wastage should I allow?+
10% covers a straight layout in a simple square room. Go up to 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, or for rooms with lots of corners and obstacles.
Do grout lines change the count?+
Only marginally. Grout joints of 2–3mm have a negligible effect on tile count, and the wastage allowance already absorbs the difference.
