How Roofing Materials Are Calculated
Roof area is always larger than the building's footprint because the slope adds surface area — the steeper the pitch, the more material it takes to cover the same floor plan. The calculator applies a pitch multiplier to your footprint, adds a wastage allowance for hips, valleys, and cuts, then converts the total into roofing squares and shingle bundles.
Formula Used
Footprint (m²) = Length × Width
Roof Area = Footprint × Pitch Multiplier × (1 + Wastage %)
Squares = Roof Area ÷ 9.29 · Bundles = Squares × 3
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a roofing "square"?+
A square is the standard roofing unit, equal to 100 square feet or roughly 9.29 m². Suppliers and installers price and order materials by the square.
How many bundles come in a square?+
Most asphalt shingle products use 3 bundles per square, though some heavier or architectural shingles use 4 — check the packaging for your specific product.
