How Pace Is Calculated

Pace expresses how long it takes to cover one unit of distance — the standard way runners track and compare performance. This calculator converts your total time into seconds, divides by the distance to get pace per kilometer or mile, and also works out the equivalent average speed.

Formula Used

Pace (min/unit) = Total Time (min) ÷ Distance
Speed (unit/hour) = Distance ÷ Total Time (hours)

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a good running pace for beginners?+
Most beginner runners fall somewhere between 6:30 and 8:30 per kilometer, though this varies a lot by fitness level. Consistency matters more than speed when starting out.
How do I use pace to predict race finish time?+
Multiply your calculated pace by the race distance. If your training pace is 5:30/km, a 10km race would finish in roughly 55 minutes, assuming you can hold that pace throughout.
