How Asphalt Requirement Is Calculated

Asphalt is ordered by weight, not area. The calculator works out the compacted volume of your surface from length, width, and thickness, then converts it to tonnes using the density of the mix you're laying. Denser mixes need more tonnage for the same footprint.

Formula Used

Volume (m³) = Length × Width × Thickness
Weight (kg) = Volume × Asphalt Density
Tonnes = Weight ÷ 1000

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?+
A residential driveway typically uses 50mm of surface course over a compacted base. Heavier traffic areas need 75–100mm laid in two courses.
Why does my supplier quote in tonnes?+
Asphalt plants sell by weight because density varies between mixes. Always confirm the exact density with your supplier before finalising the order.
