What "Ideal Weight" Actually Means
There's no single correct ideal weight — different medical formulas, all developed decades ago for clinical dosing purposes, give slightly different estimates based on height and gender alone.
These formulas were originally created to help doctors calculate medication dosages, not as fitness targets. They don't account for muscle mass, frame size, or body composition, so treat the result as a general reference point rather than a strict goal.
The Formulas Used
Devine (men): 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Robinson (men): 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet
Miller (men): 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
Female versions use slightly lower base weights
This calculator averages across three widely-cited formulas to give you a reasonable range rather than relying on just one.
